There were smart, intelligent and brilliant people in the world, when mobile phones were invented. I’m very sure of that. There weren’t just smart people, there were smart people who had also invented and created other things in their own fields. They hadn’t just invented and created things, the things they created and invented were celebrated for the problems they solved or the joy they brought.
But I assure you, when the mobile phones became a thing, every smart, intelligent and brilliant person in the world had to submit themselves to the instructions that came with the mobile phones, when they decided to own one. Why? The answer is simple: they didn’t create or invent the mobile phone. So, they needed to read the mind and heart of the creators and inventors to understand how to navigate the mobile phone. They didn’t know what and what and what the mobile phone was capable of. If they tried operating it on their own without reading the manual, at their very best, they were just guessing.
Have you ever gone to God in prayer, and try to tell Him about how you can do something or can’t do something? Or how you hate something and love another? Can you remember how frustrated you felt when you poured out your heart to God about what you can’t stand?
Some more questions for you, please: what makes you think you can’t take that? What makes you think you can’t stand before the crowd and speak confidently? So, you have descriptions of what you desire your life partner to look like; what makes you think that those are what you need in a partner? What makes you believe that you can never love your spouse again? Who told you that the city you’re avoiding and begging God to take you away from is the wrong city for you?
Even at your best, trying to define what you can or can’t do without God’s guidance is just a guess. You don’t know who you are, and at no point will you ever know all you are. Every day, as a new morning unfolds, new possibilities for your life unfold too.
Are you defining your life based on what life is teaching you or what God is teaching you? We go through different experiences in life. We grow in different cultural backgrounds. Our minds intertwine with different ideologies we encounter in our different journeys. We own them, believing that whatsoever we feel about ourselves, see about ourselves and hear about ourselves must be who we are. But, that isn’t the truth.
To know who you are, truly, you need to ask God, and keep asking God. You need to spend time reading and studying the Bible. At this point, I’ll suggest you take a pause… and go read Psalm 139:1-18. After reading that Psalm, ask God to reveal who you are to you. God is the only one who knows who you are and who you’re becoming, not your parents, friends, employers…not even you. Therefore, stop limiting yourselves to guesses from all around you.
You’re so much more than you know, so much so, you’ll need every single day of your life on earth and more to truly know who you are. Even if God has revealed many things about you to you, I dare you to believe that there’s still so much more about you. 2 Corinthians 3:18 says, we move from glory to glory. Proverbs 4:18 says our path shine brighter and brighter. So, even if you’re in touch with God, your knowledge is still limited. God hasn’t revealed all of you to you because He doesn’t reveal all of us to us, at once.
Here’s the whole idea of writing this to you: stop defining yourself through the lenses of things that are in this earthly realm. Look to God and keep looking to Him. Get your definition from Him and Him alone. Before you say, “I’m not wired for this” “I can’t take this” “I can’t be doing that at this older age” I’m too young for that” “She’s not my type” “I don’t see myself ending up with someone like him” “I can’t live here” “I can’t take that” etc… ASK GOD. Present it before Him. Get His opinion on it. Stop passing over things, places and people because you think you know yourself so well. Again, even at your best, all definitions of you without God’s supreme input are mere guesses.
My prayer for you and me:
May we never reach a point where we think we know ourselves so well that we block God out of our decisions and choices. May we never forget that even our current Holy Spirit-filled definition of ourselves doesn’t fully capture who we are. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
